Seamus' kidneys

It's probably not common knowledge, but I know a lot of people know that Seamus had an enlarged kidney when I was pregnant with him. We had lots of ultrasounds done & they kept a good eye on it. They did another ultrasound when he was born & said that it looked good.

He recently started to have some symptoms that something wasn't right; tenderness & whatnot. More ultrasounds were done this month & today he had to have a VCUG (vesicoureterogram voiding cystourethrogram), aka a tube in your wee wee to push fluoroscopic fluid into your kidneys then peeing it back out while a radiologist takes x-rays of it.

He did good. He got whiny as soon as we walked into the x-ray room, but he didn't really put up a fight. They took an x-ray of his bladder, then numbed him up with Lidocaine & put the catheter in. He cried & cried; who wouldn't? Then, when he was done, I stood him up on the table & he peed all over Ant for 10 seconds at least!

According to the radiologist, he has hydronephrosis & reflux in both ureters and kidneys. He said the urologist will probably put him on a low-dose antibiotic for a year & then do the test again. I asked him about the problem Christian had, and he said that if he had any kinks they would have seen it, so he likely isn't going to need surgery. If the reflux doesn't resolve itself by the time he's 4 or 5, they may have to do some procedure, but he really didn't go into that.

So now we are just waiting to hear back from the urologist to find out what course she wants to take.

Seamus got chocolate milk on the ride home, watched Yo Gabba Gabba, and is now sound asleep.

I should have read more. No need to answer my previous question. Lidocain. How nice. I wish my child would have been given that before he had his 8 catheters.
